More information about Antique Egyptian Bronze & Stone God "Thoth" Ibis Statue | Grand Tour Era

This antique Egyptian bronze & carved stone Ibis statue of the God Thoth was made in Egypt during the Grand Tour/Egyptian revival periods (c. 1780s-1920s) and is in superb condition. The head, neck and legs are made of cast bronze with a stunning verdigris patina, the eyes are red resin, and the body is hand-carved & polished stone.

The ibis is a long-legged wading bird that lives along the shores of the Nile, was associated with the Ancient Egyptian God Thoth: the god of writing, magic, wisdom, and the moon. During festivals and processions, priests would carry statuettes such as this from the temple of Thoth in Hermopolis Magna to the nearby necropolis of Tuna el-Gebel, where they were housed in underground passages.

This statue has been dated to the “Grand Tour/Egyptian Revival” period (c. 1780-1920s) by Mr. Matthew Wicks of Ancient Hands LTD, and accompanied by a digitally signed PDF copy of its Provenance & Ownership documentation.
